It’s not always easy to find keto dinner recipes that are suitable for the whole family.
Most kids are big fans of potatoes and pasta but when you’re on keto you obviously can’t have those.
It’s not an easy task to stay on track with the ketogenic diet while at the same time satisfying family members that aren’t living low carb.

Well, this recipe might be something that everyone will love.
This hearty and comforting Keto Shepherd’s Pie is the perfect dish to make for the whole family.
There is no doubt in my mind that everyone around the table will be satisfied with a savory, warm serving of this low carb version of shepherd’s pie.

Keto Shepherds Pie (Keto Dinner Recipe)

Keto Shepherd’s Pie: Ingredients

Even though a lot of sources online don’t seem to consider this but a traditional shepherd’s pie is made with ground lamb, not beef.
But of course, it can be financially sensible to opt for ground beef instead of lamb.

Other ingredients you’ll need for this low carb shepherd’s are (scroll to down to the recipe card for exact amounts:)

☞ broth of your choice (I recommend using chicken broth, but other kinds are fine as well)
☞ a carrot,
☞ a cup of frozen peas,
☞ a pressed garlic clove,
☞ an onion,
☞ tomato puree
☞ almond flour
keto cauliflower mashed potatoes
☞ grated parmesan cheese
☞ salt, pepper, thyme, and rosemary

One serving of this keto shepherds pie has approx. 8g of net carbs, meaning it’s very low carb.
If you’re concerned about this number because you’re on a VERY strict ketogenic diet (below 20g carbs), you can easily reduce the number of carbohydrates by reducing the amount of frozen peas and carrot for this recipe.
I don’t think it’s necessary though, especially if you’re already fat-adapted.

Being flexible with your carbs throughout the day while on a ketogenic diet helps a lot and allows for some meals that are a bit higher in carbs.
Be sure to count all of them and adjust accordingly.

How to make this ketogenic shepherds pie

Start by peeling the garlic clove and carrot and chop them as well as the onion into small cubes.
This is also the point at which you should start preparing the keto cauliflower mashed potatoes.

Remove the florets from a head of cauliflower and chop them into rough chunks.
Add 1/4 cup (50g) of butter into a pot and sauté the cauliflower chunks for approx. 5 minutes.
Deglaze with 1 cup of cream and let it cook for about 10 minutes on low to medium heat.

Continue by adding a tbsp of heat-resistant oil (e.g. olive oil) to a frying pan and sear the ground lamb for 2-3 minutes.
Add the chopped vegetables as well as the frozen peas and fry everything for a few minutes.

Add the tbsp of tomato puree and fry for 1 minute. Continue by adding the almond flour and fry it for 2 minutes. Season with salt, pepper as well as dried thyme and rosemary.

Deglaze with your broth and let everything cook on medium heat for approx. 10 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 390°F/200°C.

Meanwhile, the cauliflower in the pot should have been cooked thoroughly and is ready to be pureed.
Season with salt, pepper and a pinch of nutmeg and puree it.

Fill the meat base into an oven-safe baking dish and spread the cauliflower mashed potatoes evenly on top of it. Sprinkle some grated parmesan cheese on top of everything and place it into your oven for approx. 20 minutes.

One serving of this keto shepherd’s pie (1/6 of whole dish) has 7.9g net carbs (11.9g total carbs and 4g dietary fiber), 36.8g of fat, 21.7g protein and 478 calories.
