I don’t seem to miss a lot of things on the ketogenic diet but there are a few exceptions.
Strawberry marmelade for example or the delicious hazelnut spread named Nutella.
Thankfully, I’ve found ketogenic alternatives for both!
My 3-ingredient low carb strawberry jam is one of my favorites and this keto-friendly “Nutella” hazelnut spread will surely become a staple in my diet as well!

Granted, it’s taste is a lot nuttier with a slight hint of coconut and differs in those points from real Nutella but I absolutely love that.
“Normal” sweets always leave me feeling guilty and with a nasty feeling on my teeth whereas these ketogenic copycats are completely guilt-free and healthy!

My absolute favorite way to eat this keto-friendly hazelnut spread is with low carb pancakes!
I just spread a thin layer of the “Nutella” onto my pancake and enjoy it with a hot cup of coffee in the morning.
The perfect breakfast does exist!

    HEALTHY KETO “NUTELLA” INGREDIENTS:

(You can find the exact amounts needed in the recipe card at the end of this post!)

  • ground hazelnuts: you can also buy whole hazelnuts and ground them yourself, but buying ground hazelnuts is a lot faster.
  • coconut oil: preferably extra virgin & organic
  • powdered erythritol (confectioners’ erythritol):
Erythritol is my absolute favorite keto-friendly sweetener.
It doesn’t spike your blood sugar, it’s very safe and has a very natural sweetness to it.

☝︎ Because of its natural origin, I do consider erythritol to be a paleo-friendly sweetener!

You can use other powdered keto-friendly sweeteners that won’t spike your blood sugar as well, but be aware that you may have to add more or less sweetener if you do so.
1g Erythritol is equivalent to 0.7g sugar whereas sweeteners like Monkfruit & Stevia are usually sweeter than sugar.
Just keep that in mind before using too much sweetener!

  • sugar-free chocolate: if you can’t find sugar-free chocolate you can also use chocolate with a very high cocoa content (at least 85-90%).

    PALEO ADAPTATIONS:
Depending on how strictly paleo you are, you can either choose to use chocolate with a very high cocoa content (because it contains only a small amount of sugar) or use unsweetened baking chocolate (unsweetened baking chocolate contains only cocoa butter & cocoa solids without the sugar).

  • VEGAN ADAPTATIONS:
If you’re vegan you have to watch out for chocolate that contains milk products like whey.

  • baking cacoa powder (dutch processed cacoa powder): dutch processed cacoa powder has a very strong chocolate taste and because of that it’s ideal for low carb baking.
You only need a very tiny amount to make chocolate keto treats.
  • seasoning: sugar-free vanilla extract

PALEO ADAPTATIONS: Use 1/2 vanilla pod instead of the vanilla extract if you can’t find one without sugar & alcohol.

HOW TO MAKE HEALTHY KETO NUTELLA:

    1. Blend the ingredients:
Melt the sugar-free chocolate using a double boiler. Melt the coconut oil as well if needed.
Add the ground hazelnuts, powdered erythritol, melted coconut oil, baking cocoa powder, and vanilla extract into a food processor and blend on high for approx 30-45 seconds.
Add the melted chocolate as well and blend for another 15 seconds.
☝︎ Make sure to scrape chunky bits from the sides and the bottom of the food processor & blend again for a few seconds if necessary.

    2. Fill into an air-tight jar:
Fill the hazelnut spread into an air-tight jar.
Make sure the jar can be closed tightly because I wouldn’t recommend storing the spread in the fridge.
The chocolate & coconut oil will become hard and you won’t be able to use it as a spread.
You can store the hazelnut spread in an air-tight jar for approx. one week at room temperature.

    3. Serve:
My favorite way to enjoy the finished spread is with low carb pancakes!
You can also process the keto nutella further, for example into Healthy Keto Ferrero Rocher Fat Bombs or a delicious Keto Nutella Mug Cake!

    Nutrition Info:
One tbsp has approx. 0.7g net carbs (1.6g total carbs and 0.9g dietary fiber), 10.7g fat, 1.4g protein, and 106 calories.

(I try to be as accurate as possible with this information, but values may vary because of natural occurring fluctuations and different products used.)
